Our present possession of eternal life
“‘ I tell you the truth, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.'” John5:24, NIV. Jesus spoke in the present tense “has,” indicating that the yielded believers have received the irrevocable eternal life in Jesus Christ. The Greek noun for life is “Zoe,” that is, the new spirit given to us by God, as promised. Ezekiel 36:26. The Zoe does not address our biological life the “living.” Our natural life, our chemistry the soul, is in the flesh. Jesus told us that the spirit is life; the flesh is not life. John 6:63. He also stated, “‘ I am the resurrection and the life.'” John 11:25. We live because Jesus Lives always. John 14:19. He has risen and now lives forever; therefore, those who trust Him will live forever also.
Jesus suffered the temptation and was “made perfect” because He defeated Satan, and thus He secured the perfect and eternal life for all who trust Him. Hebrews 7:15, 16. The life Jesus secured for us is in Him, and no power could take it away from the yielded believers. It is guaranteed because God the Father granted Jesus to have life in Himself. John 5:26. Jesus spoke about the new life for the humankind given in Him by God. Jesus displayed the guaranty of eternal life for us on the cross at Golgotha. On the cross, He voluntarily laid down His life, or He separated His life from His body so that He could take on Himself the sin and our sinful life.”‘ But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.’ He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.’” John 12:32, 33, NIV.
God, on the cross, placed in the body of Jesus our life, which sinned in the garden of Eden. By abandoning, forsaking, Jesus, God destroyed our sinful life, and the sin itself, forever. The yielded believers have, here and now, the perfect and eternal life of Jesus Christ. Without Him, we are “walking dead” in the eyes of God. God made Jesus sin, so that we may become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21. The entire humankind sinned in the first man Adam, and humanity as the whole was justified in the Second Man, Jesus Christ. “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” 2 Corinthians 5:14, NIV.
Therefore, the yielded believers have the indestructible, eternal life here and now, in Jesus Christ. There is no power, neither in heaven nor on earth, that can take it from those who have died to self, and Christ lives in them. Eternal life is our present reality, not something we must obtain. Jesus obtained eternal life for us because we cannot get it on our own.
