Message in 1 John (15)

How do we know we are born of God?

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and anyone who loves the Father loves his child as well.” 1 John 5:1, NIV. Men often employ the “Jesus Christ” as if it is the first and last names of Jesus. “Jesus” is the human name of the Emmanuel, the God with us. “Christ,” the Messiah is Jesus’ divine title. Jesus is the Christ, the Savior of the world. Lack of this distinction results in acceptance of the historical Jesus, who did much good in this world while minimizing His accomplishment as the Messiah, the Savior of the world. This practice robs many a sincere Christian of the assurance of salvation. John discourages such practice.

“Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.” 1 John 5:10, NIV. What testimony did God give about His Son? “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:11, 12, NIV.

Therefore, he/she who claims to have the Son of God but does not have the assurance of salvation is self-deceived. We could not claim to have the Son of God without the conviction that we have eternal life here and now, in Jesus Christ because if we have Christ, we are in the Kingdom of God. We may still be in this world, but we are not of this world. “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13, NIV. The eternal life we have now is the indestructible life of Jesus Christ only. Without the life of Jesus Christ, there is no life at all.
