What does it mean?
Jesus told His disciples “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.” Mathew 10: 38 NKJ. Jesus then told them the result of taking one’s cross and following Him; “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” Mathew 10:39 NKJ.
Jesus carried His cross for our sake and therefore, we obligated to take our cross for His sake and. To where did Jesus carry His cross? He brought it to Golgotha where He surrendered Himself unto death so we could live. If we want to be with Jesus, we must take our cross, follow Him to Golgotha and there be crucified to our old-self so He could live in us. Only when, by trusting Jesus, we crucify our “I” could we join Apostle Paul in saying: “For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who lives, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:19, 20, NKJ.
The “I” shall not inherit eternity. The old human life (spirit) inherited from the first man – Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden. Therefore, it had to die the eternal death, in the body of Jesus Christ on the cross at Golgotha. God gave us a new life (spirit) in Jesus Christ. The old humankind is by biological descent. The new humankind in Jesus Christ is by intellectual assent.
To experience the new birth, we must change our attitude; change the way we think. We must, by trusting Jesus, adopt His attitude because He is the representative of new humankind – the Second, or Last Adam. The new birth is by Spirit. Only those who have died in Jesus Christ and have risen with Him into new life will spend eternity with God.
