Message in 1 John (10)

Warning against the antichrists

“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.” 1 John 2:18, NIV. The noun antichrist is found only in 1 and 2 John, and nowhere else in the Bible. John is referring to the warning given by Jesus: “Jesus answered, “Watch that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” Mathew 24:4, 5, NIV. John calls those who claim to be Christ, the Messiah, the antichrists because there is only one Christ; therefore, he who claims to be the Christ is denying the one and only Christ, and thus qualifies as the antichrist.

Jesus stated, “many will come in my name,” so John also refers to them in the plural, the antichrists. Neither Jesus nor John refer to these in the singular. The leading antichrist is Satan himself, and he always had, and has now, those who are working on his behalf to draw as many as possible out of the one and only Christ. Unfortunately, many among Christians will and do, in their unique way, fall into this category. “Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such man is the antichrist – he denies the Father and the Son.” 1 John 2:22, NIV. How does one deny that Jesus is the Christ? “For as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.” Philippians 3:18, NIV.

Those who by their teachings and theories diminish the significance, sufficiency, and the finality of the cross of Christ are the antichrists. If we were to devise rules, regulations, and requirements for salvation in addition to the cross of Christ; or claim these to be necessary to make the cross of Christ effective in us, we fall into the category of antichrists. There is nothing, in heaven or the earth that could add to the Cross of Christ. What God has accomplished for the humankind in the body of Jesus on the cross at Golgotha is all we need to qualify for the eternity with God.
