The five foolish virgins
“The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, our lamps are going out.’” Mathew 25:8, NET. What was the problem? First, the five foolish virgins forgot why they were out on the street or a road. They were concerned about their readiness and their qualification for the wedding banquet. They concluded that without a sufficient supply of oil they would not make it to the wedding banquet. The five foolish ones, therefore, were confused about their priority and their responsibility. They forgot that they were out on the street to light the way for the bridegroom. They were not out on the road to prepare themselves for the wedding banquet. No one could go to the wedding banquet unless the bridegroom takes them there.
Second, the five foolish ones were concerned more about being ready for the wedding banquet than about lighting the way for the bridegroom. Accordingly, they misunderstood oil. The ten virgins erroneously concluded that a sufficient supply of oil is all they needed to get to the bridegroom’s wedding banquet. However, they forgot that the Father is having the wedding banquet for the Bridegroom, not for the oil. The five foolish ones were not foolish because they did not have enough oil for their lamps; they were foolish because they did not get to the wedding banquet. They did not get to the wedding banquet because they did not follow the bridegroom, not because they did not have enough oil. They wanted to get to the wedding banquet on their terms.
The message for us, in the story about ten virgins, concerns about our understanding of why oil, why the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is an Absolute Intelligence, absolute Spirit, and therefore, could not vary in quantity. We either have the Holy Spirit, or we do not have Him; there is no other option. Also, The Holy Spirit could not take us to the Father’s house for the wedding banquet. Only the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, can take us there. The mission of the Holy Spirit is to communicate to our spirit about Jesus Christ Who is our only way to the Father and eternity. The work of the Holy Spirit is not to qualify us for the wedding banquet; the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, has already qualified us for it. The Holy Spirit empowers the yielded believers to light the way for the Bridegroom – Jesus Christ.
