What kind of God did Jesus reveal to fallen humankind, the sinners?
Jesus revealed to us a God who went far beyond all expectations in expressing His love to His enemies, the sinners. “For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NET) The phrase “For this is the way…” used in NET, is an adverb which portrays the manner and extent of God’s love. The above verse could begin as “This is how much God loved the world…” God loved the rebellious humankind in such manner and to such extent that He surrendered, or sacrificed His one and only Son to reconcile His enemies to Him and thus ensure that believers could spend the eternity with their God who loves them.
The sinners had no right to expect the manner and intensity with which God expressed His love toward rebellious humankind. The Apostle John, in the above verse, stresses the extent to which God went to achieve genuinely unexpected and undeserved results on behalf of His enemies – the rebellious humankind. How God chose to express His love is truly beyond comprehension. There are no words that could adequately describe it. The faithful to God will spend eternity exploring the manner and the extent God chose to express His love without ever exhausting all knowledge concerning it.
